What is the Bahai Fast

For the last 21 years I have taken part in a period of fasting that lasts 19 days. In 2016 starting March 1 to 19, I, and every other Baha'i over the age of 15, do not eat or drink from sunrise to sunset.
These 19 days are intended as a period of prayer and meditation and the physical reminder of a spiritual fast.

My challenge with the Baha'i Fast has generally been great - I love to eat - and this blog is a way to keep me in check.
I have used this blog off and on for the last several years to tell my experience with the Fast and, to ultimately become stronger spiritually.
At the end of the 19 days Baha'is celebrate Naw-z, which coincides with the spring equinox and for some these days are spiritual times. For me,the Fast is a personal struggle. Call me lazy, call me whatever you want but even though I struggle it's an important time for me to push myself to do better.
That's why I'm doing this blog. I strongly believe spiritual or mental growth, while not easy for a guy like me, is important and so I want to do better each year.
That is the hope.
The Baha'i Faith was founded in 1863 in Baghdad by Baha'u'llah, its members have grown to approximately six million followers worldwide. The fundamental teachings of the Baha'i Faith are love, oneness of religion and humanity.

Each day, or the next morning, I post an image of the day and my thoughts of how the day went. Check back often and feel free to share/comment or email me with questions.

The opinions and views expressed in this blog are mine only and do not necessarily reflect the opinions of any institution of the Baha’i Faith. I recommend to go right to the source. A good resource is a Baha'i Teachings website

Here's a couple of cool resources/articles related to the Baha'i Fast:

- Huffington Post article 2013 in Huffpost Religion
- Pretty nifty Wordpress creative site from a couple years ago. Don't know if it's active anymore.

Just a note regarding the dates of the fast. Baha'is around the world have adopted what is called the Badi Calendar, which follows a solar calendar consisting of 19 months of 19 days, with 4, or 5 in a leap year, intercalary days. Because of this change, the dates of the Fast, which are usually March 2 to 20 are now March 1 to 19.
